Chapter 7: The Kings & Queens Advance
The next day, the Gladiator Devils and the Reapers went to Town Square to shop. Technically, the only ones shopping were Scarlette, Devila, and Cantaloupe. The rest of them tagged along to see what was for sale.
“I hate shopping.” Grumbled Charge.
“Why?” asked Shade.
“It’s boring.” Charge grumbled.
“I agree.” Nitro muttered. “But Cantaloupe likes it, so I have to pretend not to hate it.”
Turbo, Nitro, and Umbra broke off to go check out the weapons shops. Turbo picked up a huge great sword and held it over his head.
“Look at this, Nitro!” he grinned and swung it over his head. He knocked over several sword stands in the process.
Nitro sighed and held two double-edged swords. “What awful weapons!”
“What’s wrong with them?” asked Umbra.
“They’re too free.” Nitro explained. “You have to worry about cutting yourself. With my double sword, you have total control of both blades at all times.”
“I see.”
The shop owner walked up to them. “Are any of you three planning on buying anything?”
“That depends.” Umbra glanced around the store, “Do you have any scythes?”
“No.”
Umbra was about to comment when there was a scream in the background. He perked up. “That was Lotus’ voice.”
Nitro nodded. “Let’s go!”
The three of them rushed to the source, at the center of Town Square. The city was shaped as a wheel, with spokes going off in different directions leading to different parts of the area. In the center was a large circular area.
Lotus was on the floor gagged and bounded. Standing over her was KQ, who was twirling his triple katanas around his head. Nearby, Hearts held Cantaloupe by her hair and kept a dagger near her face. The other members of the Kings & Queens pinned down Scarlette and Devila.
“What are you doing here?” growled Turbo. He raised his sword and shield.
“Drawing out the bait.” KQ grumbled. He kicked Lotus forward, “You do some recruiting? Who’s this?”
“That’s my girlfriend!” Umbra stepped forward and lashed out his scythe.
KQ glared at him, curious and annoyed. “And who are you?”
“He’s a friend of ours.” Turbo spoke.
KQ yawned. “Well, your girl didn’t put up much of a fight. Went down pretty quickly.”
Umbra rushed forward and swung his scythe. KQ sneered and raised one of his triple katana outward. It struck Umbra’s scythe which much greater force than the reaper anticipated. He was launched backward into the crowd of people.
Turbo and Nitro rushed over to Umbra’s side. “Are you okay?”
Umbra slowly got up. He coughed. “What power!”
KQ kicked Lotus over to the other Kings & Queens, who began taking her away. Nitro rushed forward to try and stop them, but Hearts intercepted him. She did a low sweep and knocked him off his feet.
“Aww, you look so pathetic when you go into try-hard mode, Nitro…” Hearts cooed.
KQ rushed forward and kicked Nitro in his body armor, sending him flying. He turned to Turbo, who was advancing towards him, now cautious about his approach.
“What are you going to do, Turbo?” KQ and Hearts circled around him, “Clearly you don’t expect to do wonders against the likes of us, huh?”
KQ leaped out of the way suddenly. A massive ball and chain landed on his previous spot moments later. Flame rushed forward and retrieved his weapon, followed by the other Gladiator Devils and Twila.
“Ladies and gentlemen.” KQ smirked. “Here comes the tag team of idiots, led by the famous Turbo.”
“In the name of the Reapers.” Twila snarled. “Stand down!”
“Reapers?” KQ laughed. “What?”
“You heard me!” Twila helped Umbra up. “Get lost!”
“Or what?” snarled KQ.
Twila shot a blast of darkness at him. KQ leaped out of the way and avoided the attack. He grumbled and signaled to Hearts, and the two of them dashed off after the others.
Turbo got up and helped Nitro to his feet. “Let’s go!”
“Where did they go?” asked Umbra.
“What? I thought you saw them leave?”
“I did. But I don’t know where they went!”
Nitro grumbled, “Let’s go find them.”
“How do we do that?” asked Turbo.
He sighed and turned to the group. “Alright, everyone! Let’s ask around. Everyone split up into groups of two, and find some sources. Anything on leads to the Kings & Queens.”
“How will the you all know if we find something?” asked Shade. “Town Square is kinda big.”
Nitro thought for a moment. “Umm…does anyone have any flares or something we can shoot up?”
“I do.” Twila handed them four small flares.
“Why do you carry around flares?” asked Charge.
She shrugged. “Always be prepared.”
Nitro nodded. “Okay, when you think you’ve found them, shoot the flare into the sky and the rest of us should be there soon!”
They nodded. “Got it!”
“Let’s go then!” Nitro shouted. “Let’s find our friends!”
